Trip to Sitting Bull Falls

I went to Sitting Bull Falls in Lincoln National Forest to research the next location for photo shooting. Sitting Bull Falls is located about 50 minutes from downtown Carlsbad, NM. Byron, with the National Forest Services, showed me some spots with incredible views. After driving on bumpy roads, we hiked down to one of the caves he knew. The cave has a huge entrance which looks like a big mouth trying to swallow whatever comes in, which gave me goose bumps. But inside the cave is amazingly beautiful, decorated with incredible formations. After this, we hiked the area above the sitting bull falls.

Cave near Sitting Bull Falls State Park in Roswell, New Mexico

New Mexico is a very dry state, but this park has so much water coming from underground, and it is incredibly clear water. Actually you can go swimming in the pool at the bottom of the falls, and you see so many fish in the pool. Very cold water though… (around 67F?). I have done a photo shoot at the falls, and the image will be included in my next exhibition at the Roswell Museum of Art.

Anyway, I couldn’t find a location for photo shooting this time, but it was a good hike and a good break.

I am surprised to find a national forest area named for Sitting Bull. He has generally been associated with the Dakotas.

My grandmother actually saw Sitting Bull several times while she was a child at Fort Yates, ND.

During peaceful times, Sitting Bull and other Sioux would come to the fort to purchase supplies. After the war and Custer’s Last Stand, my gradmother saw Sitting Bull return to Fort Yates as a prisoner.

She was born Anna Jane Lutze on January 31, 1879. She died at age 95 and would be 129 years old today.

I now digress a bit –

I am 57 today and was 23 when my grandmother died. It is absolutely amazing to think of everything that took place or was invented during her life time…

Grandma was alive during the terms of 19 US presedents – Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland (again), William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Willliam Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford!

Transportation – the covered wagon (for real – that’s how her family traveled to Fort Yates, ND from Fort Niagra, NY!), the automobile, the streetcar, the Wright Brothers’ flight, Charles Lindberg’s transatlantic flight abd Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon!

Electricity, radio, movies(including silent, talking, black & white, and color), television!

Medicine – general anesthesia, preventive vaccines, antibiotics, open heart surgery and heart transplants!

Back to the present topic –

I look forward to see your photographs of Sitting Bull Falls and hope I will someday see them myself. The southwest is so beautiful.
